Point Arena is a quiet destination on the Mendocino Coast, steeped in history and maritime adventure. 120 miles north of San Francisco, it can be reached in 3 hours, the last half driving the Pacific Coast Highway. Point Arena is in southern Mendocino County, 20 minutes north of Gualala and 50 minutes south of Mendocino. The traveler can experience a quaint town with the beautifully restored art deco Arena Theater; shops featuring the work of local artists; good restaurants; spectacular, unspoiled beaches and the Point Arena Lighthouse. Arena Cove is one mile west of Highway One. This location off the main road provides a unique solitude not found elsewhere on the north coast. Arena Cove is home to a municipal pier and dozen or so boats that make up the commercial fishing fleet. Most days the fishermen bring in their catch while mesmerized land-dwellers gaze on in awe. The Cove is also home to sport fishing, abalone diving, tide pooling and world-class surfing.

Just a few miles up Mountain View Road, you'll find the closest vineyards to the Coast Guard House. This unique appellation is known as "Mendocino Ridge". It's a non-contiguous appellation that starts at an elevation of 1700 feet and rises to 2600 feet, where you'll find Dan and Vicki Dooling's labor of love. The Zinfandel and Syrah wines produced by Mariah are unsurpassed, and you're welcome to visit and taste - their hours are flexible, but call first.

A few weeks ago friends of ours invited us to dinner and they served Lula's 2010 Anderson Valley Pinot Noir. When tasted, it first demonstrated a not-so-uncommon cherry and plum flavor, but this was followed by a distinctive finish reminiscent of tobacco and minerals, often only experienced in Pinots from the Santa Lucia Highlands. We love this wine, and we plan to learn more about Mendocino County's newest winery in the near future. Check back here for an update.

Philo Ridge is a small Mendocino County winery with vineyards on Philo Ridge and a tasting room in downtown Boonville. Given the perfect growing conditions for the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes relied upon to make first rate "méthode champenoise" wines, it's no wonder that Jean-Claude Rouzaud, then president of Champagne Louis Roederer and fifth generation descendant of the founder, selected the 580-acre Anderson Valley vineyard and winery site in 1982. Roederer Estate Brut is the first California sparkling wine to be produced by Champagne Louis Roederer, further building upon a 200-year tradition of fine winemaking from this family owned company. Roederer's unique winemaking style is based on two elements: complete ownership of its vineyards and the addition of oak-aged reserve wines to each year's blend or cuvée. Typically, Roederer produces some of the finest sparkling wines to be found anywhere in the world.

Due to its small size, dining-room seating is typically limited to a large communal table (reservations are advised). This is the only place in Point Arena with a full bar, and it has acquired a wide-spread reputation for its exotic cocktails, as well as your traditional standards. With the latest technology and its superb acoustics, Arena Theater today is poised as one of the best, albeit small, entertainment venues anywhere! It's able to accommodate between 175 and 250 people, for weekly first-run movies, documentaries, art and classic films, live telecasts of the Metropolitan Opera and the National Theater. Home to frequent live performances by excellent hardly-known local musicians as well as musical artists with international reputations and acclaim.

Just north of the Coast Guard House is the Point Arena Lighthouse. Climb to the top, 144 steps, to fully appreciate the panoramic views of Manchester Beach and the rest of the rugged Mendocino Coast. The first lighthouse was constructed in 1870 but was devasted by the infamous 1906 earthquake. The one that stands today was built in 1908. It stands 115 feet tall, and features a First Order Fresnel Lens, over six feet in diameter and weighing more than six tons, now housed in the station's fog signal building, which also contains a museum and gift shop.

Tobi and John from Ross Ranch trailer their horses from their ranch in Elk down to Manchester Beach, just 10 minutes from here. They take excellent care of their horses and are great guides. We can't recommend them highly enough. Instead of riding on the beach, you may want to consider horseback riding through the redwoods on the trails of the Ross Ranch. It's a longer drive from the Coast Guard House, but we think you'll find the ever-changing scenery along private trails through forests and meadows to be particularly rewarding.

Just a five minute drive from the Coast Guard House is B. Bryan Preserve. A tour of this 100 acre preserve is a rare opportunity and is highly recommended. B. Bryan Preserve was established in Point Arena by Dr. Frank and Judy Mello to aid in the conservation of rare and endangered African antelope and zebra. Not a zoo, but a private preserve committed to the breeding and preservation of some wonderful, rare African hoof stock. A tour at B. Bryan Preserve is designed to give the visitors and animals plenty of space to roam while allowing for close up viewing. The 100 acre estate is particularly inviting at feeding time (5:30 pm in summer and 4:00 pm in winter) for an up close view of each species. Enjoy the power and dominance of the male antelope, the romping of newborns and the individual personalities of zebra. Tours are available by reservation only. The 1-1/2 hour tour cost $20 per adult and $10 for children 10 and under.

Navigating the Albion River is an easy paddling experience but it’s somewhat tidal dependent, particularly if the wind is working against you. But if you catch the tides just right, paddling is even easier. Your trip will be approximately five miles. Shortly after you leave the Albion River Campground, you’ll come across a few homes floating in the water. Please pay heed to the “No Trespassing” signs and respect the occupants’ privacy. Shortly thereafter, you’ll feel as if you’ve totally escaped civilization. Don’t be surprised to see otters as you travel further up river amongst the redwoods until the river narrows so much that it’s no longer navigable. Then it’s time to turn back, and with any luck the tide will now be heading out, making your return seem almost too quick.

Hendy Woods State Park

Hendy Woods State Park covers 816 acres of land, and contains two groves of old-growth coast redwood: Big Hendy (80 acres) and Little Hendy (20 acres). Some of the trees are over 300 feet tall and are nearly 1000 years old. The park's facilities include several miles of hiking trails, including a wheelchair-accessible trail through the redwoods. This is a wonderful spot for a picnic when wine tasting in the Anderson Valley - there are 25 tables available along the banks of the Navarro River.

The championship course is tough, no doubt about it. Not a typical American course - it plays like a genuine Scottish Links Course, meaning it's not manicured like a botanical garden. The 18 hole, ocean-side course was designed by Robert Muir Graves in 1973. What to bring: extra golf balls, a wind breaker, and your very best game. What to leave at home: your ego - this course likes to punish people, especially when it's windy.
