The Waifs Come to Point Arena

On Monday, August 25, 2008, the Arena Theater will raise its curtain for an      evening of wonderful music from folk the Waifs.

Learn more about Club 47 ConcertsHighly regarded for their honest songwriting, rollicking blues-y-ness and the soaring vocals of Vicki Thorn, Donna Simpson and Josh Cunningham, the Waifs have become a hit with folk and roots audiences worldwide. The Waifs' inspirational tale of self-determined international success began some 16 years ago. When sisters Donna and Vicki met guitarist Josh in a remote corner of the Western Australian desert, they began their journey from Australian grass-roots road warriors to international festival favorites. Their mobile cottage industry of campfire-crafted songs and independently recorded, gold-selling CDs slowly reached critical mass in Australia between 1996 and 2000. The band so impressed Bob Dylan, when they supported him on his 2001 Australian tour, that he asked them to join him in his North American tour, including a gig at the Newport Folk Festival. There they were acclaimed "the darlings of [that] year's festival" by the Newport Daily News.

Tireless touring and their captivating on-stage chemistry led to a contagious festival following throughout Europe and North America. The growing international reputation of the band led to the release of Sink or Swim in the United States in 2002. The Waifs have enjoyed two top fifty singles in Australia, London Still in 2002 and Bridal Train in 2004. Their watershed album, Up All Night (2003), stormed mainstream and alternative charts back home and picked up four ARAI Awards, including Best Independent and Best Blues & Roots Release. The Waifs can expect even more praise this year, having just released their latest album, SunDirtWater,

.

Touring with Vicki Thorn (harmonica, guitar, vocals), Donna Simpson (guitar, vocals) and Josh Cunningham (guitar, vocals) are Ben Franz (bass) and David Ross MacDonald (drums). Opening for the Waifs is singer-songwriter, Krystle Warren.
